self care rituals: what are they & how do I discover my own?

I could be wrong (ahem, rarely I am – ha!) but sometimes when people hear the phrase “self care ritual” they think of a daily luxurious bubble bath, a glass of wine, a good book, soft music, and nothing but the sound of candles flickering at dusk… Ahhh! This couldn’t be further from the truth, for me and probably for most of you. So, what is a self care ritual, why do you need it and how does one discover one?

“Self care” has definitely become a buzzword as of late and I believe it’s because every year life becomes more hectic.

Another box to check, another bill to pay, another form to fill out, one more work task arriving in your inbox, and the list goes on.

All these “extras” is why a lot of folks are talking about self care these days, because, well damn, WE NEED IT!

Think “Fill Your Cup” Stuff!
We’re all busy and life is complicated which is forcing us to stop, take a minute and breathe. However, most of us don’t know where to start when it comes to creating a self care ritual. And, when I say “ritual” I don’t mean stuffing your face full of donut holes every morning, or polishing off that wine bottle each night, or creating that luxury bubble bath complete with the “Calgon take me away” effect.

What I mean when I say “ritual” is finding those little self care things in life you want to make time for that are actually good for you. Fill your cup kinda stuff. Stressbusters.

Ain’t No One Got Time For A Bubble Bath
I don’t know about you guys, but I ain’t got time to create an indulgent bubble bath every night for myself – I’m lucky if my kids get a bath!

On the other hand, I’m not even sure if a bubble bath is my thing. Seriously – that sounds like more work because it means I need to clean out the tub!

So, what’s a busy, hard-working, goal crusher to do when they need to check their boxes and make time for their self care ritual?

Well, here’s your answer… (it’s a three-step process)

Find Your Self Care Ritual In 3 Easy Steps
The first step is to EXPLORE. Try different things that put a smile on your face, put a song in your heart, and that take little effort to do and that are easy to squeeze into your day.

For example, read a good book. You can read for just 5 minutes, or more and it’s super portable. Take it with you wherever you go. Whether it’s paperback or digital – you can keep it on hand and use it to take a break from your hectic every day by stepping into a whole new world!

Ask a friend! A good second step. Most friends have a lot in common. This means if they have self care rituals that help them adult better chances are their rituals might help you too.

When in doubt, hit up Google or Pinterest. I’m a Pinterest-holic and I know for a fact they’ve got TONS of self care ideas, pre-fixe rituals and so much more! From morning to afternoon, to evening – whatever time of day works best for you, they have a self care ritual that suits your needs.
