To some people the word “self-care” seems lavish and something only narcissist’s practice. This could not be farther from the truth.
The reality is that not very many of us have had enough experience or practice with self-care. In fact, some of us don’t even know what it means, where it comes from or what to do.
Self-care is essential to experience a little peace in your life. Here are a few of my favorite self-care things I can’t live without. Hopefully, a few of them will help you to kickstart your own list of things.
10 Self-Care Things I Can’t Live Without
#10 Meditation cushion – I was always the skeptic when it came to meditation, but that’s completely changed over the last few weeks. Now, I can’t go a day without it. It’s like a good massage for your thoughts and emotions – an express therapy session if you will.
#9 Yoga mat – If you know me at all, this one is kind of a no-brainer. Breath and movement are key to taking a mental mind break.
#8 Running shoes – Running allows me to clear my mind and start fresh. It helps my body send out those feel-good endorphins.
#7 A good pair of black yoga pants – C’mon, you’ve all heard it before. To look good, you need to feel good. ‘Nough said.
#6 Hugs & kisses – Everyone needs some kind of affection in their life on a regular basis. The hugs and kisses I get from my family are my little rays of sunshine. A real cup filler!
#5 Coffee – Let’s be honest… I couldn’t do half the things on this list without it.
#4 Aveda stress-fix oil – I use this at the end of every yoga class in savasana on each of my students to round out their practice. I use the oil myself when I feel stress coming on, or if I know I might be headed into a stressful situation. I rub a bit behind my ears, neck, wrists and inner elbows. That clary sage ‘tho!
#3 Water – No one can live without it. Although I used to work with a guy who only drank Mt. Dew. Bleck!!! Water is the only thing that quenches my thirst and helps to power my energy. It also keeps my skin healthy, keeps me regular (yep!) and allows me to push through my physical activities.
#2 Pen and paper – I love to write. Journal, blog… you name it! I even like writing to my husband, kids, and good friends. Whether it’s texting or hand-written notes – it’s all good and keeps my creative juices flowing.
And, the #1 self-care thing I can’t live without…
NAPS! It’s all about the naps. Even if it’s just a 20-minute superpower nap. A good, solid nap time always does the trick to freshen me up and keep me going until bedtime.
So, what’s on your list? I’d love to hear.
